Online news channels form one large echo chamber, where the orientation of news becomes increasingly fluid. Based on one specific news topic you will explore the broader use of image (satire, comic illustration, memes, edited image) to highlight and direct content through various outlets. A well-curated selection of visual statements presented on A0 posters will be the outcome of this interactive workshop.

ACED ON TEXT

The influence of algorithms and the constant hunt for clicks have changed the way we consume media and how media organisations are communicating. Learn the tactics to find alternative use of written information. Focusing on a specific subject, we will delve into the expansive use of text (captions, headlines, comments, tweets, hashtags) across different channels. Find out how news is currently manifesting itself through society and the individual. At the end of this hands-on workshop the most intriguing textual statements will be collected and presented in the form of single booklets.

Texts and photos are shared, but memes go viral. How does journalism respond to this simple law of likability? Create your own eight second video meme and see for yourself. This workshop revolves around the question of how news is designed in the versatile medium of the moving image. With a concrete news item as a starting point, you research the extensive use of video (viral gifs, animations, audio, YouTube recordings) on different platforms. The experimental results are brought together in a collective playlist that can be viewed on a screen.
